Evesham undone by ace McDonald

Cannock 205 all out, Evesham 127 all out (Evesham lost by 78 runs).

EVESHAM entertained Cannock in this Birmingham & District Premier League Division Two clash and missed an opportunity to beat one of the top sides in the table. Cannock batted first and posted a score of 205 that seemed well within the reach of the home side.

But a dramatic middle-order batting collapse cost Evesham the game. The day started well for the home side as the visitors lost both openers with just 12 runs on the board.

It looked better when Paul Thomas had Eral Anderson (29) caught behind with the score at 79-3. Brenton McDonald (86) and David Womble (31) then put together a vital stand of 71 to take the score to 146 before Womble was caught by Neal Radford off the bowling of Thomas. Wickets then fell at regular intervals as the visitors struggled against the bowling of Danny Sproul (3-52) and Max Stokoe (3-33).

The home side started positively despite the early loss of Stokoe as Sam Cheshire joined Gary Lewis (12) to push the score along to 57 before Lewis was bowled. Evesham then lost the important wicket of Matt Snyman, who fell lbw for just 10 runs with the score on 79. Even with the loss of Cheshire for a splendid knock of 54, the home side looked favourites to win but from 110-5 they collapsed to 127 all out. McDonald completed the day after his match-winning knock by taking 4-28 to seal the win for Cannock.

Evesham Seconds also crashed to defeat in Division Three at the hands of Lichfield by 92 runs. Batting first, Lichfield managed 242-3 from 46 overs, thanks largely to Ben Astley, who hit an unbeaten 120.

Matt Knight was the top Evesham bowler, as he finished with figures of 2-40.

In reply, Evesham were skittled out for 150 in 38 overs as Lichfield’s Philip Stevens ripped apart their innings, taking 6-32.

Evesham Thirds crashed to a six-wicket Crusader Worcestershire League Division Seven defeat to Cleobury Mortimer.

Evesham could only manage 98 all out with Cleobury Mortimer reaching their target for the loss of just four wickets.

But Evesham’s Sunday side notched up a seven-wicket victory in the Worcestershire Sunday Club League against Colwall.
