Seven-wicket reverse

Elmley Castle 146 all out, Wellesbourne 147-3 ELMLEY Castle fell to a seven-wicket defeat against Wellesbourne in the Cotswold Hills League Premier Division.

Elmley forfeited the toss due to a late arrival and were put into bat by the home side.

On a slow wicket, a lack of patience was the visitors’ downfall as batsman after batsman gave their wicket away after playing a loose shot.

Only three men reached double figures, aided by a healthy looking extras column.

Opener Simon Corbett grafted away at one end for 25 overs while a procession of team-mates came and went.

The hard-working Corbett reached 42 before he finally succumbed with the score on 79-5.

This brought together brothers Jamie and William Bailey who knuckled down for 10 overs and scored at three-an-over before Jamie was caught off the bowling of Evans for 16.

Steve Charlton then joined skipper William Bailey to add another 30 runs until Bailey holed out for 31.

Grant Print (7) and Charlton (6) both perished as Elmley were dismissed for 146.

Wellesbourne were the model of patience and worked hard for every run. F Maynard hit some attractive shots before being bowled by Corbett for 21 and M Plant scored a quick-fire 16 until Steve Webb forced him into playing on.

Opener P Priday hit 21 and his partnership with D Barnett turned the game in Wellsbourne’s favour.

Barnett hit a fine unbeaten 64 and Priday finally holed out to Webb off skipper Bailey but it was too late for a revival.
