INCOMING Evesham captain Ian Tyrrell marked the new golfing year with the traditional drive-in.

In sunny but cold conditions, Tyrrell drove three balls down the first hole for retrieval by waiting members.

The successful ball-spotters were Geoff Wellens, Tony Murphy and Paul Callaghan with each receiving a bottle of whisky for their efforts.

The afternoon four-man team competition with three scores counting on each hole was won by Geoff Insall, Ian Hughes, John Jones and Tony Smith on 108 points.

Second with 106 were Steve Wood, Phil Day, Nick Webb and Pete Stanley and third on countback with 102 were Tyrrell, Tony Murphy, Wellens and Dave Carsberg.

Meanwhile, Jan Titley won Broadway ladies’ 16-hole stableford on a crisp but bright morning.

She scored 32 points with Lin Andrew finishing ahead of Annabelle Carter on countback in Division One with both on 31.

Chris Parkinson took the lead in Division Two with 31 ahead of Rhiannon Gadsby-Evans on 28.

Broadway men contested the penultimate round of their winter league on a bright, sunny morning.

But the 60 pairs contended with a biting wind.

Lee Jones and Barry Cubitt won the better-ball contest with 48 points from Mal Ross and Joe Icke on 44 and Mick Sandalls and Paul Walker on 43.

Leon Ballard and James Waterhouse dropped to fourth on countback.
