ASHTON-under-Hill Cricket Club celebrated their stars of 2017 but issued a stark warning over its Saturday set up.

Second-team captain Shaun Whalen-Smith called for "more commitment" in order to ensure two competitive Saturday sides could be fielded after turning up for one match with seven players.

First-team skipper Jack Perks admitted it had been an "erratic season" in which inconsistent batting had been a problem but the senior team did manage to win six games, including a memorable victory over eventual champions Chipping Campden.

That game saw Jay Patel rack up a century and Mike Harris score 70 with the team eventually securing its Cotswolds Hills League Division One status.

The first-team Player of the Year award went to Will Archer who was both the team's leading run scorer with 324 and leading wicket taker with 22.

Archer paid tribute to Perks who he said had kept the team together, captained with great enthusiasm and had done a "tremendous" job at the helm.

Veteran batsman Mike Banks scored 345 runs for the second XI at an average of nearly 40, while Dave Hunting scored 300 runs at an average of 42.86 and the evergreen Guy Garland took 31 wickets for less than 20 runs each and was the leading wicket-taker in Division Five.

Garland was presented with the trophy for the most league wickets for the club.

But the second team player of the season award went to all-rounder Waqas Hussain who, in his first season for Ashton, scored 381 runs at an average of 31.75 and was also the most economical bowler. He also received the trophy for the most league runs for the club overall.

Whalen-Smith said: "Next year we need more commitment from senior players and junior players coming through."

Mitch Berry was a popular choice for the best junior player in adult cricket after impressing with his bowling and a first hat-trick at senior level.

Sunday captain Dave Hunting briefly summarised a season in which eight games were played but the undoubted highlight was Ashton winning the inaugural Bredon Hill Bash.

The 20-20 format competition saw Ashton beat Bredon in the final which was watched by a large crowd. Tom Watling was voted Sunday player of the year.

Club president Bill Shirra reiterated the need for the club to attract new players, saying: "The seconds are really at risk and that's a slippery slope."

The Captain's Cup was presented to Whalen-Smith who, according to club chairman Tony Lewis, had done an "heroic" job running the second XI in the light of player availability issues.

The Chairman's Cup went to Eddie Spires, landlord of the Star Inn, for his support for the cricket club while the club person of the year went to Jane Keen.
