THE Pershore Hospital Junior Football Cup faces extinction after more than 100 years after the organising duo stepped down.

Long-serving Alan Barnett and Terry Conway have resigned from their roles after their appeals for help were not answered.

The pair follow in the footsteps of Peter Wonfor, who stood down from the organising committee last year.

Hallow retained the Junior Cup with a 4-0 win against Evesham WMC.

Barnett and Conway will also no longer run the Minor Cup which was won by Alderton who defeated Bretforton Old Boys Reserves in an exciting penalty shoot-out.

“Following the Junior Cup final and through various issues, it has been decided not to run the competition next season,” said Barnett, the outgoing secretary and treasurer.

“The competition has been running for more than 100 years and raised many thousands of pounds for local charities.

“The Junior Cup was originally a cup for fishing at Pershore Workingmen’s Club but it later became a football trophy.

"The competition has struggled for the last few seasons.

"Had it not been for the help from the Twilight section of the Pershore Rotary Club we would not have carried on the competition for as long as we have.

“We have made urgent appeals for help over the last few seasons but no-one has come forward to take it over.

“We would like to thank our sponsors over the years but especially Judy Gardner of Eckington Manor Cookery School.”

Barnett praised the competition president Richard Williams who worked hard despite ill heath.

“Various other people including Martin Malin, Malcolm Harris and many others over the years have also helped the competition,” he added.

“I would also like to thank the teams and their supporters who have helped us to raise monies for charities over the years.”

Barnett added: “The job of being the organiser doesn’t involve a lot of work but it means dealing with the various FA’s and arranging the fixtures.

“Hopefully, somebody may come along and revive the competition in the future.

“I would be prepared to help if someone decided to take it on next year."

Meanwhile, The Evesham Hospital Sunday Minor Cup final is tomorrow at the Jubilee Stadium (7.30pm).

Badsey Recreation Club face Broadway United Res or New Inn Pershore in the showpiece event.
