EVESHAM United marked their 1,000th Southern League game with a disappointing 1-1 Division One South and West draw at lowly Wantage Town.

Paul Collicutt’s men should have wrapped things up by half-time but allowed Wantage back to earn their first point of the season.

United were in control from the start and after a series of near-misses took the lead on 22 minutes.

Nick Stanley sent over a cross and captain Matt Sysum guided home a header past Ed Cavanagh.

The Town stopper got a hand on Adam Mann’s deflected free-kick and Lance Smith and Paul Fahy were denied penalty claims.

Cavanagh saved Fahy’s drive but, against the run of play, Sysum fouled Todd Hathaway in the box on 57 minutes and Mark Francis scored from the spot.

Fahy blazed wide and Sysum’s goalbound header was cleared by Ryan Elliot as Evesham searched for a winner.
