WORCESTERSHIRE rower Lance Tredell stroked the University of Cambridge boat to victory in the 162nd Boat Race, which broke the run of Oxford wins since 2012.

The contest saw the worst conditions ever experienced by the event and the boats were fitted especially with electric pumps to get the water out as they raced.

Former Great Britain oarsman Tredell, 27, started rowing at Evesham Rowing Club and his family live in Bretforton.

He is in his first year of a land economy degree and hopes to return to the GB programme after finishing studying.

Race favourites Cambridge won the toss in rough conditions on the River Thames' Tideway course.

Much of the reason Cambridge were favoured came in the fact they were 11.8 kilograms heavier overall and 1.5 centimetres taller per man.

Their convincing victory was eventually secured in a time of 18 minutes and 38 seconds and by two-and-a-half lengths.

Cambridge head coach Steve Trapmore, an Olympic gold medallist with GB in 2000, said: "They were incredible.

"It's a tough ask to go up against what we've been challenged with in the last few years. We knew we had a lot to prove."
