EVESHAM United crashed to a 1-0 home defeat to Didcot Town on a heavy pitch at the Jubilee Stadium in Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West.

Lance Smith was dismissed for Evesham before Graham Edney’s wonder strike flew into the top corner to secure the points for Didcot.

It was only United’s second defeat in 13 league games and Paul Collicutt’s side remain in eighth place.

The best chance for the Robins came in the first minute.

A Lewis Binns cross from the left found Smith at the far post but his downward header bounced down but narrowly over the bar from only six yards out.

Another Binns cross two minutes later flashed invitingly across the Didcot box but no Evesham player was there to turn the ball home.

The rest of the first half was devoid of chances with defences on top.

The game changed in a three minute spell early in the second half.

Smith was sent off for a second yellow card and then Edney’s super strike from more than 25 yards into the top corner put the visitors ahead.

Despite being down to 10 men, Evesham continued to press but failed to test the Didcot goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell.

Didcot's defence, with Luke Carnell outstanding, held firm to keep the visitors' unbeaten run going in 2016.

Evesham: Sawyer, Dovey, Stanley (Wilson 74), Williams, Dovey, Wellon, Sloggett (Modest 60), Wood (Brown 77), Smith, Mann, Binns. Not used: Taylor.
