EVESHAM United crashed to a 2-1 home defeat against Spennymoor Town in the FA Trophy second qualifying match at a wet and windy Jubilee Stadium.

It was a disappointing exit for Evesham, who had defeated higher-graded county rivals Redditch United in the previous round.

Spennymoor, from the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One North, had lost just one league game this season.

They took a deserved lead in the 11th minute through Nathan Fisher after the home side had failed to clear the ball out of the area.

The game ebbed and flowed with some robust challenges being made. Evesham’s best chance came four minutes before half-time when Adam Mann found space in the box, but he shot straight at the visiting keeper.

Evesham equalised in the 55th minute when midfielder Carl Brown hit a powerful shot from 30 yards which flew into the top right-hand corner.

With a quarter of an hour left, the winner for Spennymoor came when they were awarded a free kick down the right hand side for handball. The ball was crossed and substitute Danny Frost swept the ball home at the far post.

After numerous yellow cards, it was no surprise that one turned to red when Shane Henry got his marching orders for the County Durham side. Although Evesham put pressure on Spennymoor, the visitors held out to progress to the next round.
