EVESHAM United failed to hit the target for the second match running in yesterday's 0-0 draw at Banbury United in Evo-Stik Southern Football League Division One South and West.

The Robins made a disappointing exit from the FA Cup preliminary round at the weekend with a 2-0 defeat in a tough trip to Chasetown, who they must also visit in the FA Trophy next month.

Twelfth-placed United return to the Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium against Wimborne Town in the league on Saturday (3pm) hoping to build on beating Winchester City 1-0 in their last home match.

Evesham left Banbury’s Spencer Stadium with a well-deserved draw to remain unbeaten on their travels in the league, producing an improved display from two days earlier.

Only an assistant referee’s flag stopped them from snatching an injury-time winner after Nick Stanley found the net from close range.

Evesham made a positive start and threatened inside the opening five minutes when Banbury keeper Jack Harding turned George Washbourne’s first-time drive past the post at full stretch.

Paul Collicutt’s side continued to enjoy most of the first-half possession and Liam Harding forced another good save as United looked the more adventurous of the two sides.

Sean Wood went close to breaking the deadlock but the midfielder’s snap-shot was hacked off the line by Andy Gunn.

Evesham keeper Kevin Sawyer, who had a quiet first 45 minutes, was then called upon to make his only save of the half when he showed good reflexes to hold onto Duran Martin’s snap-shot.

The second period was evenly contested with neither keeper unduly troubled and both sides continued to play neat approach football but lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

Jack Harding touched over Washbourne’s cross-shot and Sawyer gathered safely from the hard-working Gunn.

Evesham’s second string beat Continental Star 4-3 but then lost 3-0 to Coventry United in successive Midland League Reserve Division home games.

James Taylor scored a hat-trick against Star with Andy Matthews also on target.

Evesham: Sawyer, McGrory, Wellon, Harding, Sysum, Dovey, Jackson (Brown 63), Wood, Mann, Stanley, Washbourne (Green 63, Slack 79).

Attendance: 236.
