RUTH Masters won Evesham ladies’ club championship with a best gross score of 179 over 36 holes.

Joan Hunt was runner-up with 187, while Masters was second in the nett competition with 147 behind victor Carolyn Washbourne (146).

Beryl Osborne, who gave the trophy to the club when ladies’ captain after the championship was started in 1983, presented the silverware at the evening dinner.

Handicap qualification was of 30 and below with 22 members enjoying mostly calm conditions on the first day but windy weather on the second.

The Greenhill Trophy, played over 18 holes, was presented by Helen Cross to Dinah Wood with 108 gross 76 nett ahead of Audrey Tomkins (112-81).

Angela Fletcher won the medal with 82 nett.

Meanwhile, Harvington members competed in the July medal and Manor Farm Leisure Cup. The medal was tight with Roy Hope (25 handicap) winning by one shot on 84 gross 59 nett.

Jeremy Saunders (11) bogeyed the 18th hole to finish on 71-60 with Derek Thompson (25) on 87-62 and Kevin Pickering (19) on 82-63.

The cup’s stableford format saw the top six score 38 points or more despite a blustery wind.

Tom Owen and Thompson set the early pace on 42 with the former leading on count-back.

In the final group, Saunders shot his best score of four-over-par, holing a 10-foot putt on the last to win with 43.

Simon Allsop was fourth on 41.

Broadway welcomed visitors from across the country to their ladies’ open.

Thirty-seven teams of three from 20 clubs joined members from the hosts in the Alliance Bowmaker competition. Conditions were damp to start but a breeze began to dry the course, producing slick greens.

Broadway’s winning team of Sue Barker, Molly King-Smith and Jane Wheeler made light work of the challenge with 81 points.

Second on 69 were Sheila Lawson and Margaret Riley from Broadway with Stinchcombe’s Gwen Knight.

The hosts’ Lin Everitt, Jenny Holt and Pauline Russell lost out on count-back.

Nearest the pin was Annabelle Carter on the eighth hole and Julia Fortescue on the 13th.

The day raised £355 for ladies’ captain Debbie Donoghue’s chosen charity, the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Trust.

The men’s invitation saw 26 Broadway men and partners from across the country playing in the better-ball contest.

Club president Richard Rouse and Mike Parkin from Minchinhampton scored 42 points to win, leaving David Drinkwater and Paul Newman from Painswick second with 40.

Broadway’s Russ Ralph and Adam Woods from John O’Gaunt, Bedfordshire, took third spot with 39.
