NEW captain Tess Lewinton will be leading her Bretforton Ladies into battle this weekend.

Bretforton host Newent on Saturday in their opening fixture in this season’s Premier League 2A. Newent are always a tough test and the game is taking place at Evesham High School’s astro pitch, starting at 10.30am.

Bretforton warmed up for their league bow with a brace from Sarah Hall in a 2-0 win at Gloucester City II in their final warm-up match.

In fact, Bretforton avenged last season’s league defeat against Gloucester City.

Lewinton set out how she wanted her team to play and they complied. Simple, passing hockey was the order of the day and the team carried out their instructions well.

The deadlock was broken midway through the first-half when the deadly Hall pounced.

Lewinton drew the city keeper off her line and then placed the perfect pass across the face of the ‘D’ to find Hall, who bravely slid in to score at the far post.

The midfield union certainly clicked into gear.

Lisa Workman and Hayley Whitehouse worked exceptionally hard to keep possession and were helped out on more than one occasion by the brilliant Daisy Wheeler.

Bretforton’s defence were tested with a flurry of penalty corners at the end of the first-half but stout concentration kept the visitors ahead going into the break.

Bretforton doubled their lead in the second-half with a well-worked team goal.

Heather Carr’s ball out of defence found Amy Pinkney, on her return to the first team and she slipped a pass to Whitehouse.

Whitehouse’s brilliant pass went straight to Julie Hall who turned sharply to defy the Gloucester keeper.

Julie Hall fed the ball through to Sarah Hall and she made no mistake from close-range in firing home her second goal of the match.

Bretforton’s goalkeeper Vicky Watkins was rarely troubled throughout the game.

And when she was called into action she was as adept at dealing with the danger. Great defending by Sarah Cook and the evergreen returning veteran Jane Wheeler also kept the Gloucester team quiet.

Training will take place on Wednesdays at Evesham High School from 7pm to 8:30pm.
