VALE swimmer Tazmin Pugh has been crowned an English all-schools junior champion in two events.

The 14-year-old was one of five teenagers selected from Shropshire’s Ellesmere College for the West Midlands, facing seven other regions at the English Schools Swimming Association’s Inter-Divisional Championships.

Pugh, of Pershore, was selected for the 100-metres and 200m butterfly in Bristol as well as the medley and freestyle relays.

In the 100m butterfly, Pugh threw down a marker to her rivals for the National Age Group Championships in four weeks.

She won in style by more than three seconds with a new personal best of one minute 2.82 seconds.

Pugh also broke the oldest English schools record, which has stood since 2007, by 1.12 seconds.

It was the 11th fastest time for a 14-year-old girl in the country.

In the 4x100m medley relay, Pugh helped the West Midlands to a bronze medal, swimming the fastest butterfly leg from all eight teams.

On the second day, she again led from the start in the 200m butterfly, coming home six seconds ahead of the north-east competitor in 2.18.68 and narrowly missing another English schools record.

The 4x100m freestyle team relay saw Pugh dive in on the second leg, bringing her team back into contention from sixth to third before they eventually finished second.

Pugh was close to repeating her Midland Championships success of winning a medal in all her events.

The north-east won the competition overall with the West Midlands in fifth position.
