THE name of Moeen Ali will without doubt have featured regularly in the England selectors’ conversations ahead of this summer’s impending Test series with Sri Lanka and India.

The ECB head honchos will name their squad tomorrow for the first of two Tests against the Sri Lankans, which begins at Lord’s on Monday, June 16.

Whether or not Worcestershire’s impressive left-hander will get the nod remains to be seen, but he could not have done more to press his claims over the last 18 months.

The 26-year-old all-rounder has three One Day International caps for his country as well as six in the 20-over format and would dearly love to add Test cricket to his CV.

After missing two Championship matches on England limited-over duty, Moeen followed up the 99 he made against Derbyshire back on April 29 with a stunning 162 in Worcestershire’s first-innings 476 all out in the ongoing LV= County Championship Division Two game with Surrey at The Oval.

That superb knock would have served as a timely nudge for the England selectors, but Moeen insists his primary focus remains doing well for Worcestershire.

“Of course it would be nice to play for England,” he said. “But I’m not thinking about that. I’m just taking one day at a time, helping Worcestershire win and hopefully get promotion.

“I’ll be happy either way as playing for Worcestershire is an honour for me. I really enjoy it and I’m happy to do either. If I don’t get selected, it doesn’t worry me as I’ll just play for Worcestershire.

“There will be opportunities to get into the Test team, but I have to perform well for Worcestershire first.

“Test cricket is something I really want to play and I enjoy the 50-over stuff too because I can take my time batting. Test cricket is where the biggest test is though and that’s where I want to push myself most.”
