UNDEFEATED Evesham Cadets under 15s have been crowned West Midlands Table Tennis League Division One champions.

They started the final day in third place, four points behind leaders Colebridge and two away from Wood Green.

Despite missing out on the title by a single point last year, Evesham arrived in Burton full of confidence.

Simple 9-0 victories over Criftins and Burton ‘B’ left matters in their own hands. A 6-3 win over toughest opponents Burton ‘A’ would have been enough but Evesham triumphed 9-0.

Number one seed Alex Tomlinson beat the two highest-rated individuals but took the full five sets to defeat his first opponent in the final round and James Morrow saved two match points before winning.

However, Craig Witheford was at his best with routine straight-sets victories. Evesham’s strength in depth proved vital. Tomlinson was pipped to the golden bat for player-of-the-season by county team-mate George Carroll.

In Evesham and District Association Specsavers Division Two, there are three fixtures left.

Littleton Cobras are champions, while Littleton Panthers and Bengeworth Wolves contest runners-up spot. Bengeworth’s Chris Message tops the averages but Panthers’ Witheford could take over.
