WORCESTER Athletic Club members secured two silver medals from the Scottish Senior Championships in Glasgow.

Scottish junior international and Pershore High School pupil Heather Paton was first to compete in the 60-metre hurdles at the Emirates Arena and moved through to the final.

The 17-year-old made a fine start and was locked in a battle for second, coming home by 0.02 seconds with the silver in a new club record and personal best of 8.86.

It was Paton’s second senior Scottish medal, having gone better than her outdoor championships bronze.

English schools champion, Worcestershire’s Ella Gibbons, now studying at Loughborough University, was up against Scotland’s best in the women’s high jump.

In a close competition, Gibbons also claimed a silver.

With the British Universities Championships in Sheffield at the end of the month, the ex-Pershore High student is showing the form that took her to fifth in last year’s British Senior Championships. In the 60m sprint, Zoe Styles, seeded fifth in her heat, finished in third place to gain one of the automatic qualification spots.

She was the eighth fastest in the field for the final but the 18-year-old ignored the rankings. Getting away well, she ran just outside her best to finish sixth in 7.98.

Having become the first female athlete from the Worcester club to run under eight seconds, she has now achieved the feat four times in five races.

The Evesham High School student then tackled the 200m heats and cruised home safely in second place.

However, with a three-hour wait for the final and a six-hour journey back, the young athlete left for home.

In her debut indoor season, Georgina Greenwood, of Naunton Beauchamp, has been on a steep learning curve.

She was fifth in her heat with a personal best of 59.71.

Against older opposition, the Pershore High 17-year-old looked at home over two laps.
