Plucky United in defeat to leaders
9:30am Saturday 2nd November 2013 in Sport
EVESHAM United suffered their fifth Calor Southern League Division One South and West defeat of the season, losing 2-0 at table-topping North Leigh.
United failed to build on a strong first-half display when they looked more likely to make the breakthrough before conceding twice after the break.
Marcus Jackson was a constant threat for the Robins and created three openings for himself in front of goal only to fire into the arms of keeper Paul White each time.
Luck was on North Leigh’s side when Linden Dovey’s goalbound volley struck a defender on the line before sailing over.
There was a fright for the Robins at the opposite end when Aaron Woodley’s header crashed against the bar before being cleared.
It was a different story after the break and, with the slope in their favour, it took North Leigh just four minutes to open the scoring thanks to Keiran Sanders’ low drive past injured goalkeeper John Bateman.
Approaching the hour mark, the game slipped further away from Evesham’s grasp when Jacob Walcott took advantage of hesitancy at the back to fire under the restricted Bateman.
A couple of goalmouth scrambles failed to produce an Evesham reply but Shaun Cunnington’s side kept going, forcing White to make impressive stoppage-time saves from Jared Wilson and Nat Lewars.
Evesham: Bateman, Wilson, Mansell, Loney, Dovey, Tambling (Botfield 6), M Jackson, Barnfleid, Smith, Lewars, Brown.
Subs not used: Holloway, A Jackson, Magee, Sherry.
- Pershore Town lost their fourth consecutive match, going down 2-1 at Lichfield City with Mark Owen scoring for the visitors in a close contest.
Town host Pelsall Villa in the Midland Combination Premier Division on Saturday (3pm).
- Badsey Rangers are second in Division Two following a 6-1 win at Burntwood Town.
Matthew Iorns, Grant Pinkney, Ben Johns (2), Alfred Sutton and Sam Ford scored the goals.
