Robins ready for an FA Cup tonic
5:30pm Thursday 12th September 2013 in Sport
EVESHAM United hope to put their poor start to the season to one side and spring an FA Cup surprise on Saturday (3pm).
The Robins, yet to win in five Calor Southern League Division One South and West fixtures, take on Stourbridge in the first qualifying round at the Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium with £3,000 prize money on the line.
Gary Hackett’s Glassboys have been a bogey side for United in recent seasons, knocking them out of the cup in two of the last four seasons, and are seventh in the Premier Division.
But Evesham, who beat Midland Combination Premier Division outfit Bolehall Swifts 2-1 in the previous round, are ready to make it third time lucky.
Manager Shaun Cunnington said: “It’s a game everybody can look forward to.
“It will be a very tough test but one that everyone is relishing and talking about at the club.
“We haven’t had the best of starts in terms of results but, barring the Wimborne game (lost 6-0), performances have been OK.
“The cup springs up all sorts of upsets and hopefully we can do that.
“It can also set clubs up in terms of finances and there is prize money everyone is after.
We want to have decent runs in the cup and FA Trophy.
“I’m very disappointed with the results but we have been encouraged by some of the performances.”
Cunnington added: “Defensively, we have been undone but there are encouraging signs going forward.”
Neil Barnfield is the only player missing on Saturday as the midfielder completes his threegame ban for a red card.
Cunnington is in the market for a midfielder, forward and centre-half but won’t have any new faces for Stourbridge.
He said: “We have put seven days in for a couple of players and hopefully we can get them in before the following weekend.”
Evesham drew 2-2 with Redditch United in Midland Combination Reserve Division One thanks to goals from Nathaniel Lewars and Paul Whitehouse.
