National title triumph for Broadway star
10:30am Saturday 31st August 2013 in Sport
BROADWAY’S Andrew Walters has won the Bowls England Men’s National Singles Championship.
He beat England international John Rednall from Felixstowe and Suffolk 21-14 in the final at Beach House Park, Worthing, to claim the coveted crown.
Walters avenged defeat to the same player in the National Champion of Champions final in 2009.
The former England junior international produced fine 21-7 wins over Essex County’s Ed Morris and Cumbria’s Ryan Prince, of Whitehaven, on the way.
Walters won the last championship played at Worthing as the venue moves to Leamington next year.
Broadway also reached the final of the over 60s mixed double rink through teams of Viv Hall, Joan Parfitt, Michael Aubrey and John Oliver and Bridget Cresswell, Yvonne Hopkins, Dennis Hall and Steve Aldren.
Bromley beat them by five shots as Oliver’s rink won 23-22 but Aldren went down 21-15.
Broadway beat 2012 runners-up Chacewater from Cornwall in the semis with Aldren triumphing 23-18 and then taking the extra end after Oliver’s rink recovered to tie the match.
