EVESHAM United returned to winning ways in Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West with their best performance of the season Leigh Downing’s eighth goal of the season at playoff chasing Didcot Town secured a 1-0 success.

The Robins dominated and only good keeping and poor finishing kept the final scoreline down.

Defender Richard Mansell made his debut after joining from Cirencester and top-scorer Marcus Palmer was recalled to the starting XI. Didcot enjoyed their best spell at the start when striker Ricky Allaway hit an upright and Mark Jones saw an effort ruled out for offside.

Evesham were then in total control and Didcot defender Sam Elkins cleared a Carl Brown shot off the line before the decisive goal arrived on 22 minutes.

Brown twisted and turned in the box before finding Downing who calmly slotted home from six yards.

Keeper Marcos Periera prevented Didcot falling further behind with blocks from Brown, Palmer and Will Gayton.

It was one-way traffic in the second period with Palmer firing wide and Periera pushing Jamie Hyde’s piledriver onto the bar.

He also saved bravely from Gayton and Brown dragged a shot wide after a poor clearance from the keeper as Evesham ended Didcot’s eight-match unbeaten home run.

Evesham: Cross, Wilson, Mansell, Sysum, Jackson, J Blake, Downing, Hyde, Palmer, Brown (Kandekore 85), Gayton. Subs not used: Clarke, Gould, Hitchman, A Blake.

Attendance: 130.
