Three-sy does it for sharp Robins
EVESHAM United registered back-to-back Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West victories for only the second time this season.
The Robins recorded a convincing 3-0 midweek success over Wimborne Town after a fine 1-0 triumph at Didcot Town last weekend.
Evesham, up to 11th in the table, host 10th-placed Shortwood United on Saturday (3pm) hoping to move above their Gloucestershire visitors with a third consecutive success.
They jumped over mid-table rivals Wimborne after in-form Leigh Downing scored twice and had a hand in the other goal.
United, unchanged from the side that beat Didcot, had to wait just 12 minutes before taking the lead. Will Gayton’s corner was cleared to Downing who netted with a superb volley.
Wimborne responded by forcing keeper Tom Cross to save at full length from Matt Kenble’s header and then Jared Wilson cleared off the line from Steve Smith.
United took a hold on the game by scoring in the opening minute of the second period when Downing’s inswinging corner was glanced in at the near post by Gayton.
Wilson and Downing were inches away from extending the lead with shots that shaved the Wimborne woodwork.
Downing capped an inspired performance with his third goal in two games, collecting a short corner from Gayton and drilling low past keeper Jason Harvell 60 seconds from time. Meanwhile, Evesham have put in a seven-day request to approach 13-goal Bromsgrove Sporting striker Chris Conway who was on Aston Villa’s books as a youngster. The Robins have signed defender Richard Mansell from Cirencester.
Evesham: Cross, Wilson, Mansell (Clarke 79), Sysum, Jackson, J Blake, Downing, Hyde, Palmer, Brown (Kandekore 45), Gayton. Subs not used: Gould, Hitchman, A Blake.
Attendance: 128.
- Pershore Town beat West Midlands League outfit Dudley Sports 1-0 in the Worcestershire FA Senior Urn quarter-finals after a weekend without a game.
Thirteenth-placed Town return to Athium Midland Combination Premier Division duty on Saturday with a tough trip to title-chasers Nuneaton Griff (3pm).
