Evesham secure league in fine style

EVESHAM under 17s won the North Midlands League after a fine 16-5 victory over Old Halesonians.

They earned national cup qualification by triumphing in trying conditions with the forwards passing a tough test.

Fly-half Mike Harris managed the game with his fellow backs defending well but Old Hales also provided a solid barrier.

Player-of-the-match Wilf Watson finished a blind-side move from a five-metre scrum and Harris missed the conversion but kicked a penalty before the break.

Evesham’s Watson bagged his second try and Harris slotted a penalty.

An under 15s and 16s team beat Droitwich Spa under 16s 12-5. Evesham dominated the first-half with fine tackling from Harry Howells, Josh Perry and Jack Evans.

Expert ball-handling led to Evesham’s first try by Rob Smith and a solo effort from player-of-the-match Sam Roberts who also converted.

Evesham under eights played Upton with the Lions winning 6-4 twice and Tigers drawing 6-6 and losing 8-6.

For Tigers, Milly Hyett (2), Freddie Sharp, Bailey Matthews, Dan Lee and Lottie Gilderson scored tries in the draw.

Hyett and Matthews grabbed braces in the second match. Tommy Boorman was the player-of-the-day for Lions with four tries.
