Hope in form for six-try Pershore
12:00pm Thursday 7th February 2013 in Sport
PERSHORE Rugby Club put their Midlands Three West (South) title hopes on the line when they host leaders Old Coventrians on Saturday (2.15pm).
The Wyre Piddle-based side seem ready to pounce on mistakes from the top two this term and powered to a 40-14 success at Woodrush last weekend.
They are eight points behind Saturday’s opponents with one game in hand and seven away from second-placed Old Leamingtonians with two more fixtures.
Pershore crashed 74-21 at Old Coventrians earlier in the season but have won all 11 league matches since then.
The Worcestershire side travelled to Woodrush for their first game in three weeks in muddy and windy conditions, making it 12 straight wins in all competitions with an impressive firsthalf display.
Woodrush showed early indiscipline, allowing lock Scott Williams to push the ball forward with penalties to touch.
Top try-scorer Martin Hope bagged the first, instigated by the pack who drove an early line-out 40 yards for the number eight to score and scrum-half Lewis Dolphin convert.
Intense pressure led to the second try with Tommy Hayes marshalling the back line.
He attacked the blindside through Ash White on the wing and, with quick hands between the outside backs, put supporting prop Alex Peel through to finish from 20 metres out. Pershore dominated possession and the set-piece as a scum led to Hayes releasing White though a gap to sprint home.
The bonus point was secured within 30 minutes when centre Rich Baker finished a surge through the flailing defence under the posts.
Flanker Rich Jenkinson made an incisive break from a ruck, passing inside to full-back Alex Hanson who outsprinted the covering winger to score.
Woodrush regrouped and took advantage of the conditions to outscore Pershore 2-1 on secondhalf tries.
Pershore had the last say when Dolphin made a break to release Hope who scored their sixth try.
Dolphin added the conversion.
