Winning return for Bretforton

BRETFORTON retained the West Clubs Women’s Hockey League North Division top spot after a 1-0 victory over Wootton Bassett.

They made hard work of their first league game after Christmas but were saved by a penalty flick.

Lacklustre Bret enjoyed most of the first-half possession but failed to convert pressure into goals.

Wayward shooting and the impressive Wootton keeper kept them frustrated.

Despite strong defending, Bret keeper Vicky Watkins made a vital save to keep the scores level.

The hosts passed the ball better in the second period.

They got a deserved breakthrough when an opponent deliberately used the back of her stick to stop a goalbound shot and Sue Headington buried the resulting penalty flick.

Bret defended two late penalty corners but remained firm to hold on for the win.
