Evesham slip down to fourth after loss

EVESHAM’S hopes of making the Midlands Three West (South) top two look slim after a 36-0 home defeat to second-placed Old Leamingtonians.

They were outplayed by confident visitors who ran in six unanswered tries.

Evesham were denied space and territory by committed tackling despite playing down the slope with a favourable cross-wind.

Old Leamingtonians, who are chasing Old Coventrians for the title, opened their try account on 30 minutes after strong forward pressure.

They extended the advantage to 12-0 by half-time and ran away with the second period thanks to a dominant display up front.

Evesham, who slipped to fourth in the table below local rivals Pershore, host Old Saltleians in the North Midlands Shield second round on Saturday (2.30pm).

The under 17s scrapped to an 11-10 home victory over Bromsgrove despite not being at their best.

The wet, cold conditions made for a battle with only a Dom Berry penalty separating the teams at the break.

The second period opened up and Ash Charlton delivered the tackle of the match to prevent a score.

Evesham’s only try came from Wilf Watson in the corner and, though Bromsgrove replied with two unconverted efforts, another Berry penalty sealed the win.

Their player-of-the-match was Ben Middlicott in his first full game at flanker.

Player-of-the-match Harry Howells, Joe Tryner and Jack Evans put in tremendous tackles as Evesham under 15s lost 36-0 at home to Longlevens.

The under 14s pack was in top form against well-drilled Tewkesbury but could not prevent a 31-10 loss.

Tewkesbury’s backs scored five tries to Evesham’s two with player-of-the-match Kieran Raymer and Lewis Cochrane on the scoresheet.

Evesham’s EEGITs beat Gloucester Harlequins 30-0 to help fund junior tours.

Man-of-the-match Ed Cross’ charge-down led to the opening try. They play Droitwich away on November 16 for Children in Need.
