PLAYERS, coaches, parents and even grandparents are coming together this weekend to give a Halesowen rugby club its own DIY SOS-style makeover.

More than 100 volunteers have already signed up to help out at Old Halesonians RFC as their ground gets a face lift in time for the new season.

The club, where more than 300 players regularly wear the shirt, has grown so much in the last few years that the ground and its facilities need updating to keep up with what is required.

Jon Arch, of Old Halesonians RFC, said: “Aside from the four senior teams, colts, and our relaunched ladies rugby team, we have probably the fastest growing mini, junior and girls rugby sections in the area.

“You have heard about DIY SOS well this is DIY rugby style – but the mouth guard and cauliflower ears are not included.

“This weekend, in conjunction with the RFU NatWest RugbyForce campaign, we will be cleaning, painting, digging, streaming and planting with the end goal to have the best rugby club in the area both on and off the pitch.

“However, great things in business and the sort are never done by one person, they’re done by a team of people.

“So although there’ll be no Nick Knowles – unfortunately – we’ll still have a huge team putting in the effort.”

The #WorkingTogether weekend will start on from about 9am on Saturday (June 16), with the club inviting members of the community to come along and lend their support.

Chairman Brad Vernon added: “Working together fits with the long-term vision and strategy of the club.

“This weekend will see the club coach, committee and senior players working side-by-side with parents of our micro (under 6s) and new members of our ladies who are yet to pull on the club shirt.

“We have for a long-time promoted a one club ethos, which we now hope to push out to the local community.”

The day will include free breakfast for the workers plus a barbecue in the afternoon, while refreshments will be available throughout the day.
