A memorial cricket match set-up by the twin sons of a sports-mad Hereford man who died at St Michael’s Hospice returns this month.

Richard Matravers, who lived in Tupsley, passed away at the Bartestree-based Hospice in 2001.

His sons, Adam and Robert, had always talked about raising funds for St Michael’s and in 2012 they brought their friends together to form two sides to battle it out for the Richard Matravers Memorial Charity Cricket Match.

Since then, with the brothers each captaining a side, a further four matches have been played at various venues across the county, with Adam’s team currently leading 3-2.

This year’s match on June 24, the first for two years, takes place at the Wyeside ground off Broomy Hill in Hereford.

It will be a particularly poignant match for the brothers as it is the first since their mother, Mim, died last summer, also at St Michael’s.

"St Michael’s Hospice holds a very special place in the hearts of Adam and myself as it has done so much for both our parents, looking after them in their darkest days," said Rob.

"So, to help fundraise every year for them is a privilege, especially playing a game that we both love."

To date the matches have raised almost £5,000 for St Michael’s Hospice.

This year’s match will be followed by a raffle and auction with proceeds going to St Michael’s.

Entrance is free, with a start time of 1pm.
