TRAVELLERS have set up camp in Netherton.

Caravans have been parked up on open space next to Dudley Council's Lister Road depot since Saturday (April 21).

Alan Lunt, the council's deputy chief executive and strategic director for place, said: “We became aware of the presence of this group of travellers on Sunday and instigated the process for securing possession of the site first thing Monday.

"In the meantime we are continuing to monitor the site in order to ensure that it is effectively maintained during the incursion."

He continued: “The planning application for the proposed temporary transit site in Coseley is due to be determined during May and if approved, should be in place this summer.

"If the site were available now, the incursion could be directed to the site and be required to pay rent to the council.

"Failure to comply with the direction would lead to the travellers having to leave the borough and not return for three months.

"This is exactly why we want to implement a transit site as soon as possible.”
