FAIRTRADE campaigners are celebrating after Kidderminster successfully renewed its town status, 10 years after first securing the special ranking.

The town’s Fairtrade Group was granted renewal for a further two years from the Fairtrade Foundation after demonstrating its ongoing commitment to promoting Fairtrade principles.

Kidderminster was first awarded Fairtrade status in 2007, after a three-year campaign, in recognition of the strong support for Fairtrade within the town, including the wide availability of Fairtrade products in shops and catering outlets, high levels of support from residents, businesses, Wyre Forest District Council, faith groups and schools.

Group chairman Sue Cowen said: “We are delighted that the status has been renewed again, especially as we celebrate our 10th anniversary. It is also special in that, as well as having the ongoing support of the district council, we now also have the backing of the new town council.

“We had a very successful coffee morning at the town hall to mark Fairtrade Fortnight earlier in the year attended by representatives from numerous organisations keen to help promote Fairtrade and we are looking forward to more Fairtrade promotions as the year unfolds.”

Adam Gardner, Communities Campaigns Manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, added: “We’re very pleased Kidderminster has renewed its Fairtrade status.

“Thanks to the ongoing support of the public and campaigners, an increasing number of farmers in developing countries are now selling their products on Fairtrade terms, bringing them a stable income, and the chance to trade their way out of poverty.”

He said Fairtrade helps small-scale farmers ensure they earn stable incomes and have long-term contracts with companies.

They also earn the Fairtrade Premium, which they invest as the farmer-owned co-operative democratically chooses, in projects that will benefit their business or community.

The FAIRTRADE Mark independently certifies that products meet economic, social and environmental standards. As such, it is the most widely recognised ethical mark worldwide.
