DEBBIE Bowyer has always been interested in arts and crafts but it was about 30 years ago when she discovered her true passion – cake decorating and sugar-crafting.

She had gone along to a cake shop in Trinity Street, Worcester, where they were holding a course on cake making – baking was another of her interests.

But, as she learnt about the different aspects of creating delicious cakes, she found she was particularly drawn to the decoration.

Debbie, now aged 58, of Wick, near Pershore, said: “I enjoyed baking and this course came up in Worcester in a little cake shop in Trinity Street. I realised my love was in creating the flowers for the cakes.”

She said she started pursuing this hobby in the 1980s when Australian cake decorating became popular and she eventually signed up to a course with acclaimed sugar-craft expert Alan Dunn.

Over the years she has expanded her hobby into a part-time job by teaching cake decorating and sugar-crafting herself. She admits she has enjoyed teaching for many years – running Weight Watchers classes locally. She has taught sugar-craft for about five years and given talks and demonstrations for local groups.

But recently she popped into a gift shop – Three Little Pigs - in Pershore High Street, which also ran classes, to ask if they would like to run a sugar-craft course.

“I walked in on the day she had just decided she was going to close down as a shop and run it as a venue for workshops. She is championing local people who have skills and talent,” said Debbie.

She will be running her first workshop at the venue on Sunday May 14 from 10am to 4pm with a maximum of six students.

“The course is mainly for absolute beginners but what I find is that some people learned sugar-craft in the 1980s but they have not done it for years. They still have the kit and decide they want to get it out and refresh their knowledge. So the course is also for people who want to come back to it after a break.”

Debbie stressed that the course is friendly, relaxed and fun. “To be able to take people who have never made a sugar flower before and see them do it and have a laugh is what it is all about.”

During the day participants will be guided through the process of making beautiful sweet pea flowers and foliage, learning how to use coloured dusts to realistically colour flowers, giving them depth and really bringing them to life.

Debbie said: “All my classes are very relaxed and informal. The aim is to learn a new skill, make friends and have fun and lots of laughter. I can cater for all abilities from absolute beginners to advanced sugar flower makers.”

Owner of Three Little Pigs Fiona Abbott said: “We are so pleased to be working with Debbie to offer sugar-crafting workshops. Sugar-crafting is the fascinating culinary art of making stunning decorations from sugar. These are often used to decorate cakes - transforming an everyday bake into a beautiful work of art.”
