A DRINK-driver had an incredible escape after a wooden plank smashed through their windscreen when they crashed, narrowly missing the driver's seat.

Police say this shocking picture should serve as a warning and a powerful deterrent to anyone considering getting behind the wheel after drinking.

The driver, 29-year-old Elizabeth Dawson, has been jailed for 12-weeks after the crash.

PC Liam Bennett, of West Mercia Police, said: "Thankfully nobody was seriously injured during this incident but the driver should consider herself very fortunate that she did not cause serious injury to herself or anybody else.

"We hope that the swift actions of police and the sentence handed down serves as a reminder to others that we will not tolerate criminal use of our region’s roads.

"We will do everything in our power to keep our communities safe from the harm caused by drivers who are breaking the law and putting other road users at risk.

"I would also like to thank the public who initially contacted the police and helped with our investigation."

The crash took place in Worcester Road, in Cookhill, near Redditch, on Saturday, February 18.

Dawson, of Green Lane, Redditch, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, criminal damage, not having insurance or a licence, driving without due care and drink-driving when she appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Monday.

She was already serving a six-week suspended sentence for assaulting a police constable and breaching a criminal behaviour order in Evesham on Friday, September 23, 2016.

Magistrates gave her a 12-week jail sentence for aggravated vehicle taking, a four-week concurrent sentence for drink driving and ordered her to pay a £115 victim surcharge in relation to taking the Citroen C6 car involved in the crash.

She was also ordered to pay £100 compensation for damaging a kitchen cupboard door, in Redditch, on the same day as the crash.

She has also been banned from driving for 12 months.
