A WEST Midlands Ambulance Service paramedic has spoken out about the shocking treatment he and his colleagues suffered during a recent shift.

Providing an insight into what the ambulance staff go through, paramedic Cameron McVittie described how a patient was violent, and then another person wanted to fight the paramedic.

Posting on twitter about a busy Saturday night, Mr McVittie wrote: "I'm truly shocked at the last two hours of this shift.

"One patient refusing to accept help and wanting to thrash around a moving ambulance, meaning he had to be restrained by police.

"Another patient making threats towards my family, a police officer's family and causing chaos in the back of the ambulance, leading to at least 10 police officers attending the scene to ensure the patient's, our and the public's safety.

"This also lead to the patient being detained."

Mr McVittie then wrote about a second incident, just a short time later.

"Then we stop for some food only to be verbally abused by a passer-by, who also wanted to physically fight with me, for no apparent reason," Mr McVittie tweeted.

"Unbelievable. The last two hours have genuinely annoyed me, as we should never be targeted by people who we genuinely need to help.

"If it wasn't for the intervention of police, then who knows what could of happened.

"It's a matter of time until one of us gets seriously hurt.

"If you want to abuse people who want to come to your aid, have a quiet word in the mirror, because it's unacceptable."

Colleagues retweeted the message, and added their own comments.

Lucy Parrott, an ambulance dispatcher, said: "Disgusting behaviour towards staff yet again. We are here to help not to be a punching bag."

The Advertiser has previously reported about ambulance staff coming under attack, while on duty.

In June, shock figures were released which showed physical assaults on staff had doubled in the space of a year.

A female student paramedic was punched in the arm by a drunk woman, while Andy Allsopp, local paramedic, has previously described how he has been punched and spat at while on duty.
