A DOUBLE Olympic champion returned to Whitbourne Village Shop she originally opened, and showed off her latest gold medal on Bank Holiday Monday.

Hundreds saw Heather Stanning open the shop in February 2013, just six months after she won gold in the London Olympics - which was memorably Team GB's first gold at those games.

On Monday, (August 29), the rower was back at the shop and talked to staff and customers about her latest success at the Rio Olympics when she won the second gold with Helen Glover in the women’s coxless pairs.

The community owned shop supports local farmers and producers, and has achieved sales of more than £200,000.

It is staffed by volunteers ensuring it is open seven days a week, closing only at Christmas.

Shop committee chairman, Alec Heywood, helped arrange the Olympic champion's visit as a treat for the volunteers.

He said: "None of this would be possible without the commitment of 42 volunteers who staff the shop and carry out all the vital back office jobs."
