A MAN has died after falling into the River Severn this morning (Monday).

Rescue crews pulled the man from the river near to the Cathedral at around 10.40am after he fell into the waters near Sabrina Bridge.

Ambulance services managed to restart his heart before he was taken for emergency treatment at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

However, his health deteriorated and he was declared dead at the hospital. His next of kin have been informed and police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Detective Sergeant Chris Percival said: "We were called at 10:41am today following concerns for the safety of a man who had entered the River Severn near to the Sabrina Bridge, Worcester.

"Fire and rescue attended the scene and launched boat to recover the man. "He was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.

"His next of kin have been informed.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious."

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an ambulance, a paramedic area support officer and paramedics from the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “The man, who had reportedly fallen from a bridge was pulled from the river into a boat.

"He was in cardiac arrest and CPR was commenced on scene. Ambulance staff managed to restart his heart and emergency treatment continued en route to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.”

Anybody who witnessed the incident should call police on 101 quoting incident number 168s of Monday 30th November.

Police said it appeared that it was not linked to an incident yesterday morning (Sunday) when a man was rescued from Worcester Bridge by a police negotiator.
