A MAN driving a powerful BMW sports car who was racing at 100mph when his rival ploughed into a bus stop killing a 21-year-old Oldbury student has been cleared by a jury of causing death by dangerous driving.

Inderjit Singh maintained he had pulled out of the terrifying race – described as being like a Fast and Furious film – just seconds before the tragedy that claimed the life of Rebecca McManus.

The 31-year-old admitted he was a big fan of the blockbuster films and he had a Fast and Furious Poster on his bedroom wall but he stressed he was not to blame for the collision on Hagley Road.

Singh had pleaded not guilty to causing the death of Miss McManus by dangerous driving and also causing serious injury to her friend Harriet Barnsley as they waited for a bus on their way to a hen party in Birmingham.

But he did plead guilty to dangerous driving and Judge Kristin Montgomery QC warned him he could be facing time behind bars when he returns to Wolverhampton Crown Court to be sentenced.

Miss McManus who was studying Literature and Creative Writing at University was killed when Sukvinder Mannan who was driving a red Mitsubishi Evolution lost control of his car.

Mannan, 33, of Round Hills Road, Halesowen, has pleaded guilty to causing the death of Miss McManus and injuring her friend by dangerous driving and he will also be sentenced by the judge on Tuesday.

The seven man five woman jury took just 90 minutes to acquit Singh, of Cranbourne Road, Wolverhampton, on the two main charges and he was remanded on bail by the judge.

But she ruled his disqualification from driving would begin immediately as she told him he had to expect a custodial sentence for his part in the incident.

The jury had been told the two drivers decided to use the road as their own private race track to show just how fast they could go in their high performance cars.

They drove at times within inches of each other as they overtook and undertook other vehicles And the race had devastating consequences when Mannan drove into the bus shelter killing Miss McManus and leaving her friend with life changing injuries
