RESIDENTS are being invited to see a striking, and somewhat unusual, display of lace and meet the people behind the artistic creations.

Members of The 98 Lace Group, a group of lace makers who are giving lace a livelier public profile, will be at Forge Mill Needle Museum on Saturday, May 30 as part of an inspiring exhibition.

The theme of the exhibition is 'gateway' and the group members have interpreted this in a variety of ways – from the spiritual influence of the landscape to the physical deep earth mineral riches, or how the Gateway is a portal to the mind and how people negotiate life's rocky path.

These pioneering British lace artists, who also include overseas lace makers amongst their number, use traditional techniques but with a modern sensibility, also drawing on other textile approaches such as felting and embroidery.

People can meet members of the group and there will be lace-making demonstrations from 11am to 3pm.

The exhibition runs until June 2.
