THE first major step forward towards a public order to ban drinking alcohol in Evesham's Workman Gardens has moved closer this week as the legal proceedings started.

There have long been complaints about anti-social behaviour in the riverside gardens, which has even caused problems for local businesses.

The action, which has led to the order, began in October last year, and followed a string of complaints to the council and in the Evesham Journal.

Jack Hegarty, managing director at Wychavon, said: "If the order is granted it will be a criminal offence to drink alcohol in Workman Gardens and designated Wychavon officers, police and CSO’s will have the power to seize alcohol with failure to comply resulting in fine of up to £100.

"We hope residents will be pleased with this progress."

Full information on the order is available at Wychavon’s website along with information on how to comment on the plans. If all goes through the order will come into force on April 3.

David Hemming, community safety manager at Wychavon, added: "We hope that this measure will discourage people from drinking in Workman Gardens.

"When the police monitored anti-social behaviour they reported it as low within the area, but there was certainly still a fear in the community associated with the consumption of alcohol and we hope this will address that."

Letters about the consultation have already been sent to nearby residents and businesses and Wychavon has also conducted two days’ of consultations with park users.
