GHELUVELT Park will be the location as Mercian Regiment soldiers commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Gheluvelt.

Around 100 soldiers from the regiment are set to parade through the park, led by commanding officers, and will be joined by the Band of the Royal Logistic Corps.

Lieutenant Colonel Ellwood said: “The battle of Gheluvelt was was won by the sheer courage, audacity and selfless commitment of the soldiers of the 2nd Worcestershire Regiment.

“Gheluvelt is a proud and unique battle honour that we continue to cherish, and is therefore a huge privilege to commemorate the centenary of this action with the people of Worcester."

The march is scheduled to begin at 11.15am, on Friday, October 31, but will stop for the unveiling of a memorial stone to commemorate those from The Worcestershire Regiment who died for their country.

The march will continue to the park’s First World War memorial sculpture.

The names of the 34 soldiers killed during the Battle of Gheluvelt will be read out, followed by the laying of wreaths, and the playing of the last post and national anthem.

During the day, military displays, bands and museum stalls will be available to visit in the park.

On the morning of 31 October 1914, near the small town of Gheluvelt in Belgium, the Germans broke through the Allied defensive line.

With an easy route to the Channel ports and 13 German Battalions on the charge, the Worcestershire Regiment’s 2nd Battalion were called to counter attack.

They won the battle and plugged the gap in the defensive line against slim odds.

Organisers want to hear from anyone who has relatives of those soldiers who fought in this battle.
