THE sun shone down as poppies floated through the air for Worcester's annual poppy appeal launch.

One of the biggest crowds, of young and old, gathered outside the Guildhall to commemorate those who paid the ultimate price for their country to show their support for the appeal, led by the Worcestershire branch of the Royal British Legion.

David Waldron, chairman of the Worcestershire branch of the Royal British Legion, said: "We are very happy with the attendance, it was lovely to see so many people come and support the appeal.

"It's a very special year because of the centenary of The First World War, and it has been quite an eventful year too.

"To see so many young people here was lovely, as it's important they learn about the history and appreciate what so many did for them.

"The service was very moving indeed, and while we are very pleased with the support we have received so far, we still urge the public to get behind the appeal even more."

The launch of the appeal started with a service given by Reverend Nick Daw, before Mr Waldron addressed the public.

Veteran soldiers and members of the Sea Cadets were in full uniform outside the Guildhall, waving flags and banners in the air proudly.

The Mayor of Worcester, Alan Amos, was in attendance and he too gave a speech to the crowd.

"We must never forget the lessons of the past.

"Let us live for the future, but never forget all those who gave their lives."

After the addresses, poppies were pushed out of the windows of the Guildhall, showering down on the entrance of the Guildhall and all those who stood proudly, while the sound of trumpets filled the air.

Worcester MP Robin Walker was also at the ceremonial launch.

He said: "It's wonderful to see so many people coming here today, it's probably the biggest crowd we've ever had.

"Worcester always does these kind of events very well, and it was once again a very moving ceremony, and great to see so many people from the younger generations present.

"I would urge everyone to buy poppies and help all the veteran charities in doing so, as no one deserves it more."
