A TIRELESS charity worker from Feckenham has raised £7,014 for three children's cancer charities at a recent community event.

A family fun day was held at the Rose and Crown pub in Feckenham and was supported by local businesses as well as receiving a lot of help from the local community, following Sharon Simpson's other successful fundraising ventures in recent years.

Bromsgrove-based marketing agency Superdream supported the event as well as Barclays which offered to match-fund a generous sum.

The three beneficiaries of the money are Macmillan, Primrose Hospice and Birmingham Children's Hospital, which all support people with cancer.

The money raised for Birmingham Children's Hospital will go directly towards the new cancer centre at the hospital, while the amount that is raised for Macmillan and The Primrose Hospice will go into their general funds.

The fun day featured a huge range of traditional activities including games such as hoopla and hook a duck, pony rides, a bouncy castle, hog roast, barbecue, a Pimms stall, auctions and raffle, live music and a disco in the evening.

Sharon Simpson said: "Organisation was the key to the event being so successful. I had a lot of support from Rebecca Manning, wife of Superdream managing director Jason Manning, and Laura Lamb, Superdream's admin assistant, and together we managed to pull off a fantastic event, with a little help from the weather.

"What made it special was that it was a real community event, where local families of all generations and local businesses came together for a really good cause and had lots of fun at the same time.

"We all know someone who has been affected by cancer; many of us have lost somebody close to us and know the huge impact that it has on not just the sufferer but their friends, family and loved ones.

"Fortunately, my son Joseph has not been affected by cancer but he has been saved three times by Birmingham Children's Hospital neurosurgical team, so I can truly empathise with what families of cancer sufferers are going through, and this is what drives me to co-ordinate these events."
