RESIDENTS and businesses in Droitwich are being encouraged to turn of their lights and light a single candle on August 4 as part of a nationwide event to mark 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War.
At 11pm on August 4, 1914, Britain declared war on Germany, and the candlelit vigil is being held between 10 and 11pm on the centenary of the date.
Jenny Davis, arts development officer at Wychavon, said: “We’re hoping that residents and businesses will get involved in this national project that hopes to unite the nation in a reflective hour. There will be events going on across the country as well - to enable focus and consideration.”
A community event is also taking place in Evesham at Abbey Park, where candles will be supplied for members of the public.
Funding is still being made available to community groups, schools, parish councils and other local organisations to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
