Challenge to drive a tank for charity

THRILL-seeking motorists can look forward to a driving challenge with a difference next month.

Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service is hosting a fun day at Moreton Fire Service College on Sunday, September 2, to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity.

Participants can try their hand at manoeuvring a range of vehicles they would normally not get be able to get behind the wheel of, including fire engines, police cars and ambulances, JCBs and articulated lorries and even a tank, which have all been lent for the occasion by local organisations.

Event organiser Mike Parraton said: “The challenge promises to be an exciting day, with a chance to drive a fantastic collection of vehicles.

Other types of driving events can be uncomfortable competition with an emphasis on speed.

“The challenge is much more relaxed with the focus on handling vehicles with skill and enjoying new experiences, as well as having fun and raising money for a good cause.

“Behind the fun, there is a very serious message that we are supporting those heroic firefighters who risk their lives for us.

“When they run into a burning building, there is always the real risk of serious injury, and when the worst happens it’s not only the firefighters who suffer but also their families.”

Anyone over the age of 17 with a full driving licence is welcome to join in the fun during either the morning or afternoon sessions.

Registration costs £10 and entrants should raise a minimum of £90 in sponsorship with all proceeds from the event going to the charity.
