A BOURTON parish councillor is going to be a stone’s throw from the stars at the Olympic Games this summer.

Coun Jim Cowen is going to be a first responder for two weeks during the Games and will be based at the Mall, Hampton Court Palace and Hyde Park offering medical treatment to the crowd.

He is one of the lucky 70,000 Games Makers chosen from 250,000 applicants to help make the Games run smoothly. He will be working 13 shifts from Saturday, July 28.

The 53-year-old will be on hand to assist members of the public during events, as well as answering any questions.

He is even learning sign language so he will be better equipped to help people with hearing difficulties.

The former Scout leader, who works at Moreton Fire Service College, said: “It’s brilliant. It will be such good fun and I will meet some nice people. It’s giving something back as well.

“I will be right in the middle of it. I’m looking forward to it big time. I think it will be really exciting – not only are you a first responder, but you are helping the public get to where they want to go.

“It’s a once in a lifetime chance to do this.”

During the two weeks, Mr Cowen will be staying with his son Simon in a flat overlooking the Thames.
