CAMPAIGNERS are urging a council to begin installing traffic lights at a "dangerous" crossroads - more than two years after a young man was killed at the junction.

Julios Catachanas, aged 25, died when the Citroen C1 he was driving crashed with a lorry at the Portobello crossroads, in Shipston, on Tuesday, December 23, 2014.

Following the inquest into Mr Catachanas' death, coroner Sean McGovern sent a report to Warwickshire County Council's chief executive saying that unless action was taken, 'future deaths would occur'.

More than 2,000 people have since signed an online petition - set up by former Shipston Labour councillor Jeff Kenner - urgently calling for safety measures to be put in place at the crossroads.

The petition was presented to the county council, which says the lights will be installed at the junction in April - once Severn Trent Water has completed its investigation at the site.

But Mr Kenner says campaigners are "frustrated" by the length of time it has taken to get the work done at the crossroads, where the A429 meets the B4035.

"We want what we could have been given by now," he said. "We are frustrated because we have had a series of promises from the county council about the need to respond to the coroner's report.

"We would have preferred a roundabout because that would have been the safest option, but in the mean time it has now been two years since the tragic death of Mr Catachanas at this crossroads - which local people know has been dangerous for years and years.

"We will continue to fight for this until it has been delivered."

A spokesman for the county council said: "The scheme designs for the Portabello Crossroads Traffic Signal Scheme are complete and we are just waiting on Severn Trent Water (STW) to complete their investigations.

"BT have completed their investigations and we reached an agreement with them regarding payment to relocate their underground apparatus.

"STW are slightly behind, however they are due on site this month to dig trial holes, in order to clarify where their underground apparatus needs to be diverted to.

"Both BT and STW will carry out their diversion works at the same time as our main contract works.

"We are aiming to start the scheme in April subject to the progress on the above."

A spokesman for Severn Trent said: "We’re working really closely with Warwickshire County Council to help them with installing traffic lights at Portobello Junction, where the A429 and B4035 cross.

"So our pipes are protected and out of the way of the work, we’re having to move the water pipes and we’ll be working with the council to do this as efficiently as possible."
