IT might be in Gloucestershire, but Moreton Show is celebrating a special Herefordshire anniversary this year.

The event on Saturday, September 3 will mark 50 years since the Hereford Cattle Society moved its National Poll Hereford Show to this picturesque corner of the north Cotswolds. It will also be 60 years since the competition was first held to find the best Poll Hereford – that is Hereford Cattle without horns.

David Deakin of the Hereford Cattle Society said: "Moreton Show is in a great location, as it very central, attracting breeders from across the country, even as far away as Scotland. It’s also good for the Hereford Breed to be associated with one of the UK’s top one day shows which also happens to be set in beautiful countryside."

The first Moreton Show was held on the same date in 1949, when one of its major aims was to "improve the breeding and rearing of livestock". This year, there will be more than 2,000 animals on the showground in Moreton in Marsh. It also boasts one of the biggest entries of Hereford cattle anywhere in Europe. Famous throughout the world for their white face, red coat and docile temperament, Hereford cattle are also known for their adaptability, with more and more farmers choosing the breed.

This year will see Hereford breeders travelling from all over the UK to compete at Moreton Show, where one of the attractions will be the 2016 Royal Highland and Royal Welsh Shows’ inter-breed beef champion. Judging the Hereford classes will be well-known Hereford breeder and show commentator, Clive Davies, of Westwood Herefords.

This is not the only anniversary being celebrated this year at Moreton Show. The Cotswold Sheep Society is issuing a special rosette to mark its 125th year, making it the oldest sheep society in the world.

Around 25,000 people are expected at this year’s show, where the attractions include, Tractor Ted, the nation’s favourite little green tractor, 350 trade stands, a popular dog show, the thrills and spills generated by motorbikes, falcons, a golden eagle and the Lamb National as well as the finest locally-produced food and drink. There are discounts on tickets bought before the show. For all the details of what’s on at Moreton Show, go to www.moretonshow.co.uk
