A TRADITIONALLY built wood and straw beacon reaching more than 20 feet high was centre stage at the top of Whaddon Hill as Shipston residents celebrated the Queen's 90th birthday.
Tim Withers provided the field for the occasion which saw Shipston mayor Cllr Jackie Warner and town crier Marion Lowe press the plunger to light the fire, accompanied by a fireworks display. Money for the display had been raised through a bingo night.
A large crowd gathered to watch the celebrations and as the evening drew in, other beacons were visible around the Cotswolds, including those at Brailes, Mickleton and Chipping Norton.
A collection was later taken for the Coventry and Warwickshire Air Ambulance, raising £295 in memory of Sid Peachey who built the 2012 beacon for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
