A RADIO station celebrated its 10th birthday with fun-filled celebrations broadcast live on air.

Station manager Nick Mundy and Radio Winchcombe's team of volunteer presenters and technicians, staged a two-hour outside broadcast in Winchcombe town centre yesterday (Wednesday, April 22) to mark the milestone.

Presenters past and present, advertisers, and some of the station’s 65 volunteers and supporters joined the live birthday party to pass on their congratulations.

The event took place at The White Hart in High Street and included the cutting of an anniversary cake at 11.15am by some of the station’s oldest and youngest supporters.

Mr Mundy said: "We are inviting lots of different guests to call in during the broadcast party, many of who are and have been involved with Radio Winchcombe since its launch.

"We will be talking to them about both important and amusing stories from the past 10 years and celebrating this great day."

Those on the party guest list include the station’s honorary president Philip Arkell who helped set up and launch the station, and Andy Doswell, the first Radio Winchcombe presenter to take to the airwaves.

Also present were Ron Allen, a Tewkesbury borough councillor was instrumental in gaining grant funding for the community radio project and Andy Sanders, the borough’s head of economic development, who also supported the initiative.

Mr Mundy said: "The station has come a long way since Philip and just a handful of volunteers gained the station’s two-day, restricted service licence in that first year.

"Three years ago it gained its full-time community radio licence and since then has operated 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

"We provide more than 70 hours of new programmes each week and have 65 volunteers who are both presenters, technicians and support staff.

"They do a fantastic job and in 2014 a new board of directors was appointed to provide guidance and agree strategy.

"Our long-term aim is to continue improving the style and content of our programmes, to increase our profile, engage with our listeners and advertisers and ensure we gain enough financial and volunteer support to be broadcasting in another 10 years."
