AS THE world stops to remember everyone who has given their lives in the line of duty this Remembrance Day, a Question Time-style debate on the horrors of war will be hosted in Worcester.

The event entitled Have We Forgotten the Horrors of War? will be held at The Hive on Tuesday, November 11 and has been arranged by the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) as part of the city’s events commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Guest speakers at the debate, which will begin at 6pm, include professor of cultural history at the University of Worcester Maggie Andrews and Nic Millington, chief executive of Hereford-based production firm the Rural Media Company.

Professor Andrews said she was interested in hearing people’s views on the affect war has on people across the world.

“Many of us are aware of the high death toll of the First World War and are familiar with images of the Union Jack draped over coffins returning to this country as a result of the conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq,” she said.

“However, such deaths are only the tip of the iceberg.

“There is a tendency to forget that war destroys communities and fractures families.

“Participation in war has prolonged physical and emotional effects for those directly involved but also for their loved ones and children.

“The horror of war experienced in everyday lives, behind closed doors in homes should not be forgotten.”

Tickets to the debate are free of charge and are available from the level one information pod in The Hive.
