PEOPLE living in the Cotswolds are doing their bit for the environment after recycling a record amount of waste.

Cotswold District Council's waste service provider, Ubico Ltd, reported the weekly total of green waste they had collected weighed almost 463 tonnes - over 40 tonnes more than the previous highest total.

Councillor David Fowles, CDC Cabinet Member for the Environment, said it was a recycling milestone.

“Well done to the residents of the District who have obviously been very busy in their gardens and to the Ubico collection crews who have worked so hard to collect the extra organic waste generated," he said.

“This increase goes hand in hand with the rise in the take-up of our weekly paid-for green waste service.

"Half of the households in the district now subscribe to the service and the more organic waste we collect the more we are able to send for processing to be converted into compost for farms and gardens.

“It’s still not too late to subscribe to the weekly organic waste collection service and we have pegged the price at £30 for yet another year – see cotswold.gov.uk for details or call 01285 623000."

People who cannot accommodate a green wheeled bin at their property, 50 compostable brown paper garden waste sacks can also be purchased for £30 from Moreton Area Centre.

Residents who receive Council Tax or Housing Benefit are entitled to a 50 per cent discount on the price of a green waste licence.
