LAST year, Chipping Norton was named as the third worst place to live in the UK in a new book, Crap Towns Returns – Back by Unpopular Demand.

But just six months later, the town has been named as 10th most glamorous places to live in the UK in a list of 30 compiled by The Times newspaper property experts.

The supplement, published as part of a four-part series last week, said the market town is at the centre of the Cotswolds in an area now "synonymous with celebrity country living".

It mentions the original Daylesford Organic farm shop, in the nearby village of Kingham, which now has a branch in Selfridge's.

And it refers to some of its famous residents - Jeremy Clarkson, Rebekah Brooks, Elisabeth Murdoch and Matthew Freud - also known as the so-called 'Chipping Norton set' which was one of the reasons it was included in Crap Towns Returns – Back by Unpopular Demand.

Mayor Mike Tysoe said it had been a very "interesting year" for the town.

"I think they must have extraordinary good taste," he said. "It's an extremely nice place to live. If it brings more visitors into the town then fine.

"I would much rather be the 10th most glamorous place to live then the crappiest."

Last year in the same series of supplements by The Times, Chippy was named the fifth best town to live in the UK.
